Do you like taking photos? Do you REALLY like taking photos? Do you often worry you're holding others up because you're trying to get the right composition? On this trip, we prioritize the photo making process. We will travel to every photogenic area of Tokyo. We will prioritize spending enough time to feel satisfied with what we got and enjoy the company of other photographers. Bring any camera you have, from Smartphones to mirrorless to film cameras. It doesn't matter! What matters is being in a group of like-minded people that understand the reason we are there is the enjoyment of photography in a new place!

About me: I’m Alex, a career photographer from the U.S and based in Japan for over 8 years. I’ve been to many places across the country for work and pleasure and can tell you, Japan is an amazing place to be. I’ll not only arrange, guide and have fun with you, but I’ll teach you a lot about doing photography here. Especially, I love doing street portraits and have been doing it for years. So if you like, I can teach you the best ways to approach someone naturally and genuinely. No fake social media points here. Just natural, genuine conversations and good photos. So come along if you’re looking to socialize and have fun with your photography.

Accommodation: We will stay at a simple small hotel, nothing fancy. The goal is being in a good location we can wake up, go outside, hop on the train and start shooting somewhere new. We will stay in APA Hotel in Shibuya, so it's easy for us to meet up, have breakfast, take the train and return even for dinner and continued shooting. Feel free to ask all your questions in the Q&A section - See you in Japan!

Giampaolo

5/5
I had a wonderful time with Alex! His knowledge of photography is extensive and his enthusiasm for the craft is contagious. He knows all the best places in Tokyo and is an excellent guide. While I was with him I had the chance to meet interesting people and learn a lot about photography. Highly recommended!

Trip Itinerary
1

Shibuya Scramble Crossing

Day 1
First things first, we will do what probably everyone wants to do first, the mega famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing. And not just that, but explore the whole of Shibuya in all the major and side streets too. We have a lot to see here so we will definitely take our time and get the photos you want.
2

Harajuku

Day 1
Street Portrait Training session. Together we will go to Harajuku, relax finding interesting fashionable people to ask for a street portrait of. Asking for a street portrait in Japan might be more difficult than you think, so I'm going to give you some useful advice on how to do it in Japanese and make it genuine. In the end you'll definitely come away with a great experience having met new people and gotten great photos. (Don't want to take street portraits? That's fine too! The area we will all be in is always photogenic anyways so have fun shooting what you like!)
3

Shibuya City

Day 1-2
Walking back to Shibuya is easy and fun. We will continue to explore Shibuya at night. Eat, drink, shoot! This is our chance to see the nightlife, take photos of places and have fun with people who are friendly with photographers. We'll also go to Shibuya Sky Tower and see the amazing view of the crossing from up above.
4

Meiji Jingu Gyoen

Day 2
Taking it easy in the morning with a visit to Meiji Jingu Gyoen Shrine. This is a great chance to wake up with a peaceful walk to the shrine and back. It's a chance to get some nature photography into the mix.
5

Yoyogi Park

Day 2
We'll get some food from the convenience store and have a nice lunch picnic in the park. This is a chance to take more nature type photos, talk and relax before we head off to the next location. It's also a good chance to do some more portraits.
6

Shinjuku City

Day 2
Shinjuku is really intense, so it's a good thing we took our time in the morning. Shinjuku has a lot of interesting stores and sites to see during sunset and into the night. So we'll explore the area following my lead, but this is a great chance to explore your creativity.
7

Camera no Kitamura Shinjuku Nishiguchi shop

Day 2
This is our chance to do a little camera shopping. We don't have to buy anything, but the store itself is beautiful and a must-visit spot for any photographic minded person. With tons of accessories, bags, straps and beyond. I think we will definitely have fun here.
8

Shinjuku Golden Gai

Day 2
Golden Gai is a very famous series of small side streets with numerous bars. We can decide later if we want to go in one or not, but just being here to take photos is a great must do experience. It's also on the way to our next location for dinner time.
9

Shin-Ōkubo Kankoku Yokochō (Korea alley)

Day 2-3
Shin-Okubo is known as the Little Korea of Japan. With how many great restaurants here, we'll have trouble choosing where to go, so we'll definitely have time to take photos here while exploring all the side streets in this mix of Japanese and Korean atmosphere.
10

Tokyo Tower

Day 3
In the morning, we'll head straight to Tokyo Tower for breakfast and the view. It's really amazing to see an up-close view of all the buildings, and of course photos here are amazing too. It also puts us into position for the next location.
11

Ginza

Day 3
Sunday is the best day to go to Ginza, so that's what we'll do. In Ginza, they close down the main street to car traffic, so pedestrians have freedom to walk on the streets between stores, relax on benches, tables etc and overall create a friendly vibe. This means it's a prime location to take street portraits and be creative with subjects in the environment. It's also a nice place to have lunch and go to the next location.
12

GINZA SIX

Day 3
Inside Ginza Six mall, we have various stores such as Leica and also a massive book store "Tsutaya" that has a large collection of photo books to openly browse through. I often get a coffee at the Starbucks next to it too and have a chat with friends. So this is a great place to rest after roaming the streets taking photos.
13

Imperial Palace

Day 3
The Imperial Palace is a beautiful nature filled environment. So around sunset we should be in a nice golden light and a change to the pace of the busy city areas. This is a great chance to explore the area at our own pace. It also puts us into position to go to the famous Tokyo Station after.
14

Tokyo Station

Day 3-4
Tokyo Station is really beautiful at night. A great backdrop for photos and a good place to eat dinner before heading back to the hotel. Let's take our time here, but also remember we have a busy day ahead of us tomorrow too!
15

Asakusa

Day 4
In the morning, we'll head to Asakusa to visit Sensoji temple and shrine. This place also has an awesome view of some buildings across the water too, so it's quite nice. But the main area of the Kaminarimon Gate, the shopping street with snacks, desserts etc. are really cool to see that classic old style Japan. Side streets in the area are also classic and a nice place to see old environments.
16

Akihabara

Day 4
Akihabara has a lot going on. Lots of buildings to shop inside. It's a good place to take your time, especially as the day goes into night. Some people might want to take time finding some camera shops too, so we will leave ourselves open to suggestion and independence here.
17

Ameyayokocho

Day 4-5
Ameyayokocho is a great place to explore and see the locals in action. This place has a lot of small shops with various goods. An active nightlife place to shop, eat, drink and shoot before heading back to the hotel.
18

Shibuya City

Day 5
Time to see each other for a last day of freestyle plans. Didn't get to spend enough time somewhere, want to go back or go somewhere new not on the current plan? This is our chance to talk together and take a vote or split up for where to go.
