Trip Itinerary
1
Ponta Delgada
Day 1
Ponta Delgada Is the Capital of Sao Miguel. The symbolic places of the historic center are the City Gate, which is located a few steps from São Sebastião, the parish church of Ponta Delgada, overlooking Largo da Matriz, the main square with historic cafés and outdoor tables. A walk along Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, the city's seafront, is a must. Its western end overlooks the 16th-century Forte de São Brás, a Renaissance fortress that now houses the Military Museum of the Azores.
2
Lagoa do Fogo
Day 1
One of the most iconic places on the island and in all of the Azores is the Lagoa da Fogo. The view from the top of the miradouro is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular on the island. There is a downhill path that crosses vegetation and rocks and leads to the shores of the lake and which then plunges into the woods. It takes about an hour to go down and up to the shores of the lake, depending on your training and the photo breaks you want to take. The miradouro can be easily reached by car.
3
Furnas Lake
Day 1
Furnas is one of the most beautiful and famous towns on the island. It is located right in the center of the island and offers many things to see in its surroundings. Its fame is due to the healing power of its thermal waters. The water comes directly from the volcanic rocks and there are 22 thermal water springs at different temperatures scattered around, so much so that we will easily see columns of smoke coming out of the ground while visiting this area. A few kilometers from Furnas there is a large and placid lake, also of volcanic origin. We can go around the lake on foot with a peaceful two-hour walk, or limit ourselves to arriving at the south bank to admire the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitória. Caldeiras da Furnas are the largest area in which to admire the fumaroles. The water temperature ranges from 70 to 100°, and it could be very dangerous to get close.
4
Nordeste
Day 1
The coast of the Nordeste region is the wildest and least touristy of the island of São Miguel. Here there are two viewpoints: the Miradouro da Ponta da Madrugada and the Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego. Both are preceded by a wonderful and well-kept flower garden, along whose paths we can stroll or stop on a bench. We will have beautiful, the most beautiful lunch breaks on the island.
5
Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões
Day 1
One of the most popular places in the Nordeste region is the Parque Natural dos Caldeirões. It’s a magical park with splendidly varied vegetation and clear and fresh waters that finish in a waterfall Its splendid varied vegetation, the clear and fresh waters that create beautiful waterfalls and the tranquility make this park a magical place. We will reach it following paths and coming across beautiful water mills.
6
Gorreana Tea Factory
Day 1
On the northern coast of the island of São Miguel is Gorreana, the oldest and currently the only tea plantation in Europe. It covers 38 hectares and has been producing black tea and green tea in different varieties for five generations. We take an easy trek through the plantations. Inside the factory, we can see the machines that sift the tea leaves, the dryer, and the equipment that shreds the leaves before they are packed into individual bags. As you enter, you are greeted by an intense aroma of tea leaves.
7
Sete Cidades
Day 1
Sete Citades is the smallest village on the island of Sao Miguel and is located inside a volcano with its lagoons. The village is really small but characteristic with its typical houses all the same in size and color. Upstream of the village is the unmissable stop on this visit which offers an extraordinary view of the two lagoons, the stop is the Miradouro do Vista do Rei. The most beautiful panoramic point of the island is where you can indulge yourself in taking one picture after another. These are only a few of the things we will see on the island of Sao Miguel, because it offers a lot of opportunities, for natural places and activities. We can think to rent a bike and a kayak for exploring the lake.
8
Termas da Ferraria
Day 1
Where the fresh and warm water that comes out of the volcanic rocks meets the cold one of the Atlantic Ocean, the Terma da Ferraria is formed, a natural pool among the rocks, on the western tip of the island of São Miguel. The ocean waters that invade the inlet create a mixture of water of variable temperatures where you can immerse yourself.
9
Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Caldeira Velha
Day 1
Caldeira Velha is located in the crater of the volcanic complex of Lagoa do Fogo. It houses a great diversity of vegetation, a waterfall, and three pools with natural geothermal water. The shade of the water is brownish because it is rich in iron. The average temperature is 34°. In the middle of the thick vegetation, a cascade of hot and ferrous water also offers a beautiful swimming pool: here the water temperature is around 20°.
10
Ribeira Grande
Day 1-8
Ribeira Grande is the place where is located the apartment. From here we can decide to go in any corner of the island. Other than these spots in the description we will explore as many as possible places on the island. Our main will be the whale watching tour, but I'm open to try any kind of activities basing on the passions of TripMates (for example I am a scuba diver, so we can think about an immersion)
