This remarkable cultural site, originally constructed in pre-Hispanic times, was designed for tracking solstices and equinoxes. Located right on the equator line, it's often referred to as the center of the world. To savor the local flavors, we pause for a delightful coffee or chocolate break, accompanied by delicious Ecuadorian cakes that are akin to small, oven-baked bread with an exceptional taste. What's even more special is that we get to witness the baking process. Our next destination is Otavalo, famous for hosting the most extensive indigenous handicraft market in South America. This bustling market is open every day of the week. Here, you'll have approximately 2 hours to explore and shop to your heart's content at La Plaza de los Ponchos. Before reaching Cotacachi, we pause at a scenic viewpoint overlooking San Pablo Lake, framed by the magnificent Mount Imbabura. Cotacachi is renowned for its leather goods, and you'll have 45 minutes to browse through the charming craft shops. The most adventurous among us can journey even higher to surpass the 5000-meter threshold. We head south towards the indigenous market of Guamote, one of the nation's most vibrant and colorful markets. As you navigate the bustling streets, brimming with a multitude of products and animals, you'll become part of this lively village's daily rhythms. Next, we journey into the prestigious Sangay National Park, a UNESCO Natural Heritage of Humanity. A leisurely 3-kilometer hike leads you to one of the stunning Ozogoche lakes within the park's expanse. This pristine environment is home to over 45 lagoons and boasts a rich array of wildlife, including the emblematic cucuvies bird, and an array of highland flora such as Stipu Ichu (paramo grass), Cortaderia, and bromeliads.
