Trip Itinerary

Tirana
Day 1-3
We’ll start the trip in the capital city of Tirana where will stay for 2 nights. One the first night in Albania we have dinner together to get to know each other a little bit better. In Tirana we can explore the café culture, visit the bunk art museum to learn more about Albania’s communist past and go to a market to shop for some homemade goods from farmers. At night we can walk around the city center and experience the vibrant nightlife that this unique city offers.
2
Gjirokaster
Day 3-5
The last place we will visit in Albania is Gjirokaster. Gjirokaster is also known as “the City of Stone” because of it’s old town houses with unique Ottoman architecture and stone roofs. This city is a UNESCO world heritage sight, with cobblestone streets and ancient history. We can try the city’s local delicacy, frogs legs or qifqi, a baked rice ball. In this city, there are many attractions, of course, the beautiful old town with a bazar in the centre containing many souvenir shops and traditional restaurants, but the best place to visit is the Gjirokaster castle with a long history and amazing views over the city and the surrounding mountains. While we’re making our way up to the castle we can visit the cold war tunnel, a giant tunnel bunker used for transportation during the cold war, it was built in secret during the 1960s. There are also various Ottoman mansions we can visit to see how rich ottomans used to live. In this town, you will feel like you’ve travelled back in time and it’s considered the most beautiful place in Albania by many travelers.
3
Sarandë
Day 5-7
This town has plenty of beaches, a beautiful promenade, historic sights and a vibrant nightlife. First thing in the morning, after our first night in Sarandë, we can hike to the 15th century Forty Saints Monastry located on the hill above Saranda and then hike to another hill where the 16th century Lekurski Castle is located. Both these destinations offer amazing views of Saranda and Corfu island and is definitely worth the energy you will spend to walk up the hill. There are also rememnants of an old Synagogue in the centre of the city with ancient mosaics on the floor, which is very interesting. Next to the ruins of the old synagogue is a bus stop, from here we can take a quick 20 minute bus ride to Albania’s most beautiful beach in Ksamil and relax there for a while. There are three islands located in the bay which is reachable by swimming or a boat.
4
Vlorë
Day 7-8
Our last destination will be Vlorë, where we will be spending 2 nights. Vlorë is the third biggest city in Albania located at the foothills of the Ceraunian Mountains and is the starting point of the Albanian Riviera. We can walk through the city’s newly renovated old town and eat one of the most popular street foods in Albania known as Souvlaki, it is very similar to the Greek gyro and just as delicious. There’s also a historic mosque from the 16th century in the city centre known as Muradie mosque which is a beautiful sight to experience. Furthermore, we can walk along the promenade and have drink at sunset, have seafood for dinner and afterwards experience a bit of the nightlife before returning to our apartment.
