In Serbia, there is no shortage of meat, and the best grilled meat in Serbia comes from the south. The city of Leskovac proves this by boasting the largest pljeskavica in the world.
Pljeskavica is what the rest of the world calls a burger. But make no mistake. They are not the same. The difference between pljeskavica and a burger is the type of meat and the style and spices. Everyone knows about burgers, which are typically made of beef, so I will spare you the details. A pljeskavica is typically made with pork and sometimes a mixture of pork and beef. But in Muslim areas of the Balkans, where pork is not eaten, beef and veal are only used. Toppings vary, although the most common are ajvar (a local red pepper spread, which may or may not be spicey), kajmak (spread made from milk cream), cabbage, lettuce, and pickles.....just to name a few.
The festival lasts for 6 days, so you have time to try every topping!
And when we are not eating pljeskavica, cevapi, and other grilled treats, we will be exploring Leskovac and surrounding areas.
Hi. My name is Jai, and I love Serbia and the people so much that I want to share with the world in the most positive way I can.
We will take some day trips including a nearby medeival Byzantine city constructed by Justiniana Prima, National Museum of Leskovac, a medeival church that needed to be disguised as a house under Ottoman rule, and a park for sports, nature, and picnic.
