Halloween Weekend in a Village in Serbia

Hosted by

Jai

Despite having some of the best nature, Serbia is little known to tourists. But if you embark on this adventure, you will have unique memories to last a lifetime! Our main base will be a village right outside Tara National Park called Bajna Bašta. We will rent an apartment (shared rooms or not). Serbia is also home to one of the first vampires, Sava Savanović. And did you know that the very word vampire, used around the world, is from the Serbian language? About the trip: We will meet at Užice bus station. We will rent a car because the watermill that Sava used to live in (and is now uninhabitable) is about an hour and a half away from Užice, and Užice is about an hour from Bajna Bašta, the village we will stay in. I am sure we will be hungry after all the traveling, so we will go to a restaurant in Bajna Bašta for some local food and get to know each other more, and share excitement about the weekend ahead. Since it is October and the weather will be chillier, we will likely not be able to kayak or summer activities. But we will go to the village of Sava Savanovič and see if we can find him. We will hike to see what's left of the watermill. Make sure to bring lots of garlic if you are scared. Perhaps a local from his village can tell us stories about some history. We will rent either a shared apartment or a house in Bajna Bašta, a village near Sava's village. We will hike (even see a monastery near Bajna Bašta) and take in the beauty of Serbian autumn. We do have the option of campfires, but we need to be responsible with a policy of leaving no trace. I plan for this to be a relaxing time, especially if we need to have energy running away from vampires! So, what is included: - Accommodation (Shared room) - Breakfast - Car rental About me! My name is Jai. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I have always loved horror movies. I am currently writing a horror novel, and it was inspired by this vampire that we may be running away from. Don´t forget you can reach me in the Q&A section! Looking forward to seeing you in Serbia!

This was a special trip, as Jai took over for another tripleader, last minute. Considering that, the trip was a perfect mix between adventure and relaxation/meeting other people. Exactly what I needed. It was only the two of us during the trip, and I got plenty of opportunities to experience the island life as I wanted. Jai usually stayed with me to talk and to discover many things, but I did get my fair share of freedom to hop on a bike and explore to my heart's content. I thank her for all the precious memories and long talks in the evening about our other trips, and life in general. It really never got boring. Jai is a very interesting person with many things to share. I can recommend travelling with her. She can teach anyone a thing or two about living and travelling in special countries (Geogrgia, Serbia, Pakistan, ...)

What can one expect from a tripleader? I think that one can expect from the tripleader to book accommodations, to have some ideas about the places we will be visiting and to organize some activities. There was almost nothing of that during this trip as Jay relied entirely on my ideas and on my organization. So I almost became the actual tripleader (another reason for that is that Jay has a significant visual disability). Jays only organizational contribution was to book accomodations, where we shared rooms. So I got nowhere near the value of what I had paid. Then Jay simply quit the tour after four days for no real reason. I think that Jay should not be a tripleader. After this experience I cannot recommend her and I hope to resolve this issue soon.

Bajina Basta

Day 1-6
The flat we rent for the weekend (arrive Friday, leave Monday morning) will be in Bajna Bašta. Bajna Bašta is on the Drina River, an emerald colored river that has the house on the river made famous by National Geographic. Our kayaking trip will end at this house.
2

Rača Monastery

Day 6
We will have a hiking trail that will lead us to this 12th century monestary. It has interesting architecture and one of my favorite windows of all the monestaries I've been to. Raca Monestary is surrounded by peaceful nature.

Zarožje

Day 6
The famous vampire, Sava Savanović, lived here when he was alive. He lived in a watermill, and he is rumored to have hunted it for centuries before I finally collapsed. The villagers wanted to reconstruct it, but I don't think it has been finished yet and it is still uninhabitable. But this will not stop us from exploring and maybe even being able to say hello to the famous, Serbian vampire himself. Bring garlic!
