Trip Itinerary
1
Panathenaic Stadium
Day 1-2
We 'll meet at Pagrati. Here, in a coy artistic space we settle our starting point for our explorations. Until we all gather here we can cook something while meeting each other. Then we 'll walk through the impressive night life of Athens and Pagrati while heading towards Kallimarmaro. Numerus places to grab a drink of something really tasty to eat and if you want something more quiet there is a first SECRET. A place to sit, discuss and enjoy looking down the light of the city. I love it there. If we go you 'll see what I mean. We have a good rest because next day has some walking around Athens!
2
Mount Lycabettus
Day 2
We should start from there. We will follow a nice root through an elegant neighborhood and under the trees and will reach the top of the hill in less than an hour. Incredible view of EVERYTHING. From Day 1 you can understand how the city is built between the mountains and extends vastly from north to south until it reaches the sea coast. The exploration starts. We'll go down the hill from the other side and head towards the next visiting spot.
3
National Archaeological Museum
Day 2
Let's go to a Museum before lunch. You are in Athens. Archaeology is exciting everywhere. Imagine here. I think that the Archaeological Museum of Athens is a must. I will show you around and comment on my favorites. We will find ourselves amongst marble and ceramic that have soaked up the energy of the centuries and even relics and that shows the high level of craftsmanship in ancient Greece. The marvelous and "impossible" Antikythera mechanism will make us wonder about truths and lies about knowledge achievements. Technological progression is probably NOT linear as we might have thought. The experience of a short walk in Exarcheia will take place. If you prefer another museum I'll suggest a few and you'll choose.
4
Ancient Agora of Athens
Day 2-3
We will head towards Ancient Agora. On our way, we'll pass through the city center which is full of nice places for lunch and coffee. "Agora" is next to Acropolis. Part of the Ancient Market is open for a visit. We can visit it. At the end of our first day, I have a SURPRIZE! I will take you to a not-very-secret place that has the most breathtaking night view of this marvelous city!
5
Parthenon
Day 3
Temple of Athena. Everybody needs to wake up early and come to the holiest place in Athens. Showing respect we will behave properly. Athena after all gave us Prometheus fire. Everything on Acropolis reflects wisdom. Ancient art and architecture in its pride. A great place and an important "castle". a milestone with hidden mathematics and mysterious facts and urban myths that we will discuss up there. Then we visit the city center!
6
Dionysiou Areopagitou
Day 3-4
The pedestrian road in front of the museum is the most lovable street in Greece. The view of the Acropolis is invaluable. Eclecticism is the architectural style of the building arrayed one next to the other with many Greek decorative motives. This amazing scenery is often enriched by talented street musicians that make everything more magical. Whoever wants to spend some time in Acropolis Museum it is highly recommended. The rest of us will be two minutes from the entrance or at the Museum's cafeteria enjoying the view and taking the most "important" pictures of all. You can find anything around this place. We can reach one of the plenty of view spots on the most "melodic" hill on earth where the nine Muses use to play with or we can directly head towards Thission. Walk down to the city center on an ancient road, full of life and between monuments. Depending on our mood we can try some Greek cousin and if we want some Greek traditional music I will be informed of the best choice for the day.
7
Hymettus
Day 4
FLEXIBLE DAY (1st half) Plan A: I suggest we go trekking to Hymettus mountain which has a nice walking route that starts 10 minutes from my place by car. From there you can see the whole city, visit an exceptional Monastery or if the day invites us to sit and chill we visit the most unpretentious cafeteria in Athens right in the middle of the forest. If we spent many hours there you do one of the most memorable trekking routes of your life. I always prefer to visit a mountain even if it is for a little bit and not to spend the whole day but we have a plan B and a plan C: Plan B: We need more city life. Let's go downtown. We can't get enough of Athens. Let's go to a Greek dance event or even learn how to dance. More Athens is our preference. Plan C: Greece is the cradle of civilization. We need to go to Elefsina. This place has been an important place for the ancient world and unknown mysteries of the old time took place in the area of today's Archaeological Site of Elefsina. The city is the cultural capital of Europe for 2023 and it is definitely worth the extra cost to visit it. Do not forget that Elefsis in Greek means "The Coming". If we go there we might find out who came and when...
8
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
Day 4-5
FLEXIBLE DAY (2nd half) Suggestion for the afternoon: it would be cool if we visit this nice place! The new land mark of the greater area of Athens. A big "ramp building", a green-slope that roofs libraries and opera halls has consisted the most important architectural intervention of recent years. From the roof you can enjoy the view of the sea and also look back towards the city. Landscape games, trees and a big pond are there for us to have fun and complete the experience of our first day outdoor activities. Let's go there and in any case sleep early ! Next day has a trip...
9
Sounion
Day 5
A must see! It is a great place to visit. Nature and Ancient Greeks composed the most iconic cape in this country. The Temple for Poseidon at Sounion stands in the very corner of the Hellenic mainland overhanging on top of Aegean Sea. Having the privilege of the car, before or after the cultural visit we will take a plunge if we feel so. I swim all year round and I really love the Attika coasts that are always there for me. Brink a swimming suit! Of course we 'll also chose a place to eat. There are a couple of great choices.
10
Plaka
Day 5-6
After the roundtrip at the Northern coast of Attica my best proposal is to take you to Plaka and wee will go to my favorite place in Athens to eat homemade snacks or small meals. Plaka is the most wonderful area of this city! You can fall in love with every corner of this place. Cinematic. This scenery is dragged out from another age in humans history. Kind people that respect the holiness of the "Hill" and happy visitors are adding up to the experience. If we do not need to wake up early we 'll choose the best place to grab a cold beer. Athens is a city that never sleeps.
11
Athens National Garden
Day 6
The final day depending on the departure time that anyone has free day. It is irrelevant when is the time we need a breakfast and also if there is time we need to go to the National Garden (it is named of course recently, after the end of the Royalty Era in this Country since it used to be the Royal Gardens back in the day). A cool place with big trees. Local people always modify their route to pass through this oasis. We can walk there through the most amazing streets in the city center while reaching some great photo shooting points of great importance. Many urban SURPRIZES are in the city of Athens! The end of the trip is close. We are near Syntagma Square from where someone can head towards the airport or after walking down a super-popular pedestrian road through the market end up to the lovely Monastiraki Square and take a direct train line to the port of Piraeus. An unforgettable trip to Athens has come to an end!
