Trip Itinerary
1
Limón Province
Day 1-2
After a welcome at San José Airport, our adventure begins towards Puerto Limon. Enjoy an exciting hike to encounter our first venomous frogs, the famous "blue jeans" (Oophaga pumilio). Once settled into our hotel, a short evening hike will lead you to discover a second species of venomous frog, the captivating "Dendrobates auratus."
2
Cahuita
Day 2-3
Early in the morning, we will explore the stunning Cahuita National Park, the only one on our journey but certainly not the least. The reason is simple: this park is freely accessible (a modest donation at the entrance is appreciated). Contributing is crucial to support the exceptional work of the team, and it also provides an opportunity for a picturesque walk along the beach. The park's trail is alive with the frequent presence of the incredible Eyelash Viper, along with a myriad of other creatures, including monkeys.
3
Bribri
Day 3-4
Welcome to Strawberry River! We will navigate a small river where life flourishes along its banks. With each exploration of this magical place, we always discover animals we had never seen before. However, its true marvel lies in the vast population of strawberry frogs that inhabit its shores. Tiny red dots leaping around us with every step, creating a unique sensory experience. To cap off this adventure, a lovely waterfall provides a refreshing opportunity for a swim once we reach the top.
4
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Day 4-5
We will enter the territory of the Bush Master (Lachesis stenophrys), the largest viper in the world. We will embark on two hikes in this area, one during the day and one at night. It is not uncommon to encounter coral snakes and pumas in this area.
5
Cerro de la Muerte
Day 5-6
Rising to over 3400 meters in altitude, the forests of this mountain range are markedly distinct from lowland tropical forests. The presence of epiphytes and lichens creates a truly unique atmosphere in these places. The mist that sometimes settles throughout the day adds a magical touch. This is the habitat of the famous Quetzal, as well as the Cerrophidion sasai.

Cerro de la Muerte
Day 6-7
Rising to over 3400 meters in altitude, the forests of this mountain range are markedly distinct from lowland tropical forests. The presence of epiphytes and lichens creates a truly unique atmosphere in these places. The mist that sometimes settles throughout the day adds a magical touch. This is the habitat of the famous Quetzal, as well as a very rare species of arboreal crotalid that we will strive to spot.
7
Rivas
Day 7-8
Bearing strong resemblances to the Eyelash Viper, Bothriechis supraciliaris is a magnificent arboreal pit viper, with a distribution much more limited than its cousin. The valley where we will have the opportunity to observe it is also the habitat of the harlequin frog (Atelopus varius), a species classified as endangered.
8
Platanillo
Day 8-9
This place is quite unique as it is a patch of forest adjacent to an agricultural area. Nevertheless, the wildlife inhabiting this forest is astonishing. The trail allowing us to explore these areas is a bumpy road created by tractors. The presence of the Black-headed Bushmaster makes this walk truly electrifying.
9
Puerto Jiménez
Day 9-10
Most of the Osa Peninsula is inaccessible or difficult to reach. Fortunately, due to its low urbanization, it is not necessary to venture into the heart of the peninsula to witness incredible biodiversity. To conclude this journey, we will head to a small lake where the density of American crocodiles might send shivers down the bravest spines. After nightfall, we will kayak equipped with flashlights to observe the hundreds of specimens inhabiting the surroundings. During the day, we will have the opportunity to observe groups of macaws flying over the beach, as well as coatis coming to feed nearby.
10
San José
Day 10
After an early morning walk in search of the granular poison frog (Oophaga granulifera), we will hit the road back to San José. We will make stops along the road for short observations and to enjoy delicious seafood at local restaurants.
