It used to enshrine the Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Patimakon (the Emerald Buddha) that was brought from Vientiane. This temple underwent a major enovation during the reign of King Rama II; therefore, it is considered a temple of that reign. When the restoration was completed, it was bestowed the royal name of wat arun Ratchatharam.
