👋 Ciao and welcome to Abruzzo! If you’ve never heard of it... don't worry, we are proud of not being a touristy place, but we love those who are really interested in finding out more about our traditions that date back to the Romans. That's why I'm looking for Tripmates who are willing to discover the hidden gems of this ancient region with true involvement. 🗻 They call us the Little Tibet (for the tall mountains and highplains), the Green Lung of Europe (almost half of our territory is a protected national park or natural reserve) or the tiny Middle-Earth (for the impressive landscape diversity, and we even have a guy building his own Hobbit village here): what’s sure is that Abruzzo is one of those rare places blessed by a stunning morphology and biodiversity. Old traditions are still alive, and we will explore places where time seems to have stopped. And of course being Southern Italy, food culture is strong and recognizable through local biological products. 🍂 Summers can be pretty hot and winters are definitely cold here, so autumn is the best time of the year to visit us and taking amazing pictures of tall mountains, coloured woods and the insane sunsets! This is not meant to be a trip for professional photographers, but I’d like you to have the time to grab some great shots wheter it's with a camera or a smartphone. Personally I don’t like rushing from one place to another, so we will take it slow and let everyone enjoy the trip at their own pace.

--- About myself --- 🌍 I started travelling at the age of 18 and in the past 15 years I've visited more than 20 countries. This is the second time I organize this trip and the reason for choosing my homeland is that I want people to know it more and spread the word of its beauty. You wouldn’t expect it but often even italians don't know Abruzzo, so I'm really going to show you something unique that not many travellers know. And I guarantee you will take beautiful photos to show your friends and for your personal archive of good memories.

--- About the accomodation --- 📍 Our headquarters will be in Pescara, where we'll get back every night so we don't have to carry luggages around stops. You can get here by train (from Bologna) or plane (with Ryanair). You can also fly to Rome with other companies and take a bus, I’ll suggest you which company. Pescara city centre has a nice pedestrian area that pours directly to the beach, which in autumn will be quiet and free from the summer crowd. We will be staying within a few minutes walk from the sea and the main square, in an big vintage apartment with separate bedrooms and its own kitchen, nothing fancy but very comfortable and with supermarkets and restaurants nearby.

Trip Itinerary
1

Pescara

Day 1-2
Our meeting point is Pescara, either the airport or the train station. While we wait for all the Tripmates to arrive, we'll have a walk around the city. The town centre has a large pedestrian area that leads directly to the beach. The Ponte del Mare (Sea Bridge) is the main attraction, and offers a great view from the top especially at sunset. Depending on the weather we can relax on the beach or have a Spritz in one of the many bars. When everybody is ready we'll reach our accomodation and have dinner together.
2

Campo Imperatore

Day 2-3
Adventure begins! Pack your camera as we'll have a big day ahead exploring one of the most iconic areas of Abruzzo, the mighty Campo Imperatore (Emperor's Field). It's a huge plateau that you can rarely see in Europe. We'll then move to the medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, have a walk around and lunch together. Last gem of the day will be the stunning castle of Rocca Calascio, one the highest castle in Europe (1460m). You’ll never forget the view from the top, insane pictures guaranteed!
3

Civitella del Tronto

Day 3-4
On this day we’ll explore a bit more of the northern part of the region, heading the huge Fortress of Civitella (entry around 6€). Even the old village beneath is worth a visit, but the Fortress itself is just mighty, being the largest in Italy and the second in Europe, after Hohensalzburg. Depending on the time we can also check other cool villages on the way back, like Atri and its stunning Cathedral, but what we shouldn’t miss is the panoramic viewpoint from Silvi. If the sky is clear, we'll enjoy a nice wine watching the sunset.
4

Scanno

Day 4-5
Let's go for another big day! Our main destination is Scanno, the village of photographers. Not many people know that this old village has welcomed some of the most important photographers of XX century who fell in love with its small road, the traditional clothes, and the view of the heart-shaped lake. The hike to the lake viewpoint is around 30 minutes in the woods and it's accessibile to everyone. Depending on the time on the way back we can stop in Sulmona, home of the traditional italian Confetti sweets for some tastings.
5

Fossacesia Marina

Day 5-6
We'll move a bit south following the coastal road the connects Abruzzo to Apulia. In the inland, the Castle of Roccascalegna (entry around 5€) still awaits to be conquered, as nobody has ever been able to do that in more than 1000 years. You'll figure out why once you see it. Then we'll visit the old San Giovanni in Venere abbey, with a stunning view on the gulf, and stop in one of the coastal fishermen towns, where the atmosphere is great and the food delicious!
6

Valle del Tirino

Day 6-7
This area offers a wide range of activities, and we won’t have the time to do them all. But the good news is that whatever we’ll do it’s going to be amazing! I recommend an exploration of Tirino river on canadian canoe (around 40€), an itineray through the valley and the vineyards with e-bike (around 30€), a visit to the Lavino Springs with its amazing turquoise waters or an hike to an hermit retreat dug into the mountains, the Eremo di San Bartolomeo. It’s meant to be a flexible day so we’ll choose according to your preferences.
7

Chieti

Day 7-8
After going up and down through the region, for the last day I think it would be actually cool to relax a bit more. So no big plans, but a free day we can spend reviewing our photos, reading and recovering from past days efforts. The beach in Pescara is always there to welcome you, or maybe you prefer a cultural visit to some modern art museum. If the group agrees we can also head to the historical town of Chieti which is very close.
8

Pescara

Day 8
Time to say goodbye! We can hang around while we wait for your flight/train. The journey is over, but memories and friendship will stay with us forever! [Remember: this itinerary is only a suggestion, the order of the stops could vary during the week according to different factors. Same thing goes for the duration of the trip, I left the last 2 days pretty empty so if you have the need of leaving early, you have plenty of time to organize your departure without the stress of skipping something important]
